Growing Communities Box Scheme

Growing Communities started the first box scheme in London and they provide a delicious weekly selection of seasonal organic produce from £6 per week. We work with them providing pick up points at two of our shops. The reason we support them and recommend them over all other box schemes is because they are a social enterprise committed to cutting food miles, supporting small, sustainable farmers, and building community-led alternatives to the current damaging food system. Sourcing as much local produce as possible, their salad bags are grown on their own Soil Association market gardens in Hackney, their potatoes and apples come from small farms in Kent and Essex and their oranges come from cooperatives in Italy and Spain. They never buy airfreighted produce or produce from heated greenhouses. The scheme is collection only to cut down on pollution and food miles with seven community pick-up points receiving deliveries either by Maisie, their electric “cow” milk float or a bike trailer. They provide a weekly newsletter with recipes and a full list of where your fruit and vegetables have come from. Find out more about the box scheme at the Growing Communities Website, you can setup a regular order or a one-month trial. You can pick up from a number of places including at our Albion Road and Newington Green shops.
